Johnny Manziel told reporters at Texas A&M’s Pro Day on Tuesday that he wants to return to the NFL. However, if no opportunity surfaces for him, he plans to play in the CFL this year, per Drew Davison.
Manziel has been doing whatever he can do to get in front of NFL teams including working as a throwing quarterback at Pro Days the past few weeks.
Manziel is expected to take part in The Spring League this summer if he doesn’t sign with an NFL team before then.
Mike Garafolo of NFL Mediaย previously reported that Manziel “is in touch with multiple NFL head coaches” in an attempt to revive his NFL career.
“There have been conversations,” Garafolo said Wednesday. “… People around him believe it’s a very real possibility that he could return to the NFL, whether before or after hisย appearance in the Spring League.”
According to Garafolo, “teams have been informed that Manziel will take zero dollars guaranteed, minimum salary, if need be.”
Earlier this offseason, Manziel nearly had an agreement in place withย the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL, but his self-imposed deadline passed without an agreement in place.
Manziel, 25, is a former first-round pick of the Browns back in 2014. He wasย in the second year of his four-year, $8,247,250 rookie contract when the Browns cut him loose at the start of the 2016 league year.
Manzielย received a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on recreational drug and wound up sitting out the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
In 2015, Manziel appeared in nineย games and thrown for 1,500ย yards while completing 57.8 percent of his passes to go along with sevenย touchdowns and fiveย interceptions. Manziel also ran for 230 yards.ย Pro Football Focus had him rated as the No. 31 quarterback out of 36 qualifying players that year.
We’ll have more regarding Manziel as the news is available.
