Latest On Jadeveon Clowney

Update:

Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports that the Dolphins are “very interested” in trading for Texans OLB Jadeveon Clowney, but they have to “get him interested in going there.

  • According to Wilson, Clowney prefers to play for the Seahawks or Eagles. For now, Wilson says that Clowney’s situation is fluid, given that he holds leverage as an unsigned franchise player.
  • Wilson adds that the Dolphins are not willing to include OT Laremy Tunsil in a prospective trade for Clowney.
  • Ian Rapoport reports that Clowney has met in person with Dolphins HC Brian Flores and other members of the Dolphins’ organization.
  • According to Adam Beasley, the belief among “highly credible league sources” is the Texans want an offensive lineman or a wide receiver in return if they cannot get a premium pick.
  • Armando Salguero adds that the Dolphins consider themselves leaders in the sweepstakes to trade for Clowney.
  • Albert Breer mentions that back in the spring, teams that engaged the Texans about a trade for Clowney believed he could be had for a second-round pick.
  • Regarding the Seahawks, Bob Condotta reports that Seattle has yet to be granted permission to speak with Clowney, unlike the Dolphins.

According to Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo, Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney has fired his agent, Bus Cook.

The two say Clowney is unhappy about the state of discussions between the Texans and presumably other teams about his future and decided to shake things up. He filed the termination letter five days ago and can now hire a replacement, per Pelissero.

John Granato reported earlier Tuesday that Clowney was unhappy with Cook. He added that once he signs his tender, Clowney expects to be traded to the Dolphins

Granato adds that the Dolphins would have Clowney for two franchise years to convince him to stay long term if they’re able to complete a deal with the Texans.

Trade interest in Clowney has picked up in recent days. Clowney has yet to sign his franchise tag worth $15.967 million and report to the team despite a tentative report earlier this summer he planned to show up after the third preseason game.

Clowney has to sign his franchise tender in order to be traded, so this gives him some leverage in terms of where he could end up.

Houston has reportedly spoken to 10 teams including the Dolphins about a potential trade for Clowney. Before that, Michael Lombardi reported Houston’s trade demands for Clowney “will be reasonable” and “won’t be hard to solve.”

However, Lombardi noted the issue in trade talks with other teams will be the kind of money Clowney is looking for in a long-term deal next year.

Clowney, 25, is a former No. 1 overall pick of the Texans back in 2014. He was in the final year of his four-year, $22.272 million contract when the Texans picked up his fifth-year option which paid him $12.306 million for 2018.

In 2018, Clowney appeared in 15 games for the Texans and recorded 47 tackles, 9 sacks, a forced fumble, three fumble recoveries, one defensive touchdown and a pass defense. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 9 overall edge defender out of 103 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding Clowney as the news is available.
