According to Dave Birkett, the Lions have fired ST coordinator Brayden Coombs.
Birkett said this decision has been building for some time and Coombs’ decision to call for a fake punt in Sunday’s loss to the Titans was the final straw. He didn’t run the call by anyone else, per Justin Rogers.
The team confirmed the news in an official announcement.
The Detroit Lions announced today that Brayden Coombs has been relieved of his duties as Special Teams Coordinator.

Coombs was just hired this year by Detroit but as the organization experiences massive upheaval it’s fair to say no one is safe.
Coombs was hired by the Bengals back in 2009 as a coaching intern before being promoted to coaching assistant the following year. He contributed to the Bengals’ defensive staff and focused on defensive backs before moving to the offensive side of the ball in 2012 and focusing on wide receivers.
From there, the Bengals made Coombs assistant special teams coach in 2013 and he later assisting the coaching of cornerbacks in 2016. He was hired by the Lions as a special teams coordinator in 2020.
Pro Football Focus has the Lions rated as the No. 4 special teams unit in the NFL.
