According to Ian Rapoport, the Lions have released RB Jonathan Williams from the practice squad.
Williams had spent some time on the active roster the past two weeks and was a protected player to give Detroit some depth at the position. But it appears the team is getting healthier now and doesn’t need him.
Williams, 26, is a former fifth-round pick of the Bills back in 2016. He was in the second year of his four-year, $2.58 million contract when the Bills waived him coming out of the preseason.
Williams had a brief stint on to the Broncos’ practice squad before joining the Saints in 2018. New Orleans cut Williams coming out of the preseason last year and he had a brief stint on their practice squad before he was signed to the Colts’ taxi squad. He was later promoted to the active roster.
The Lions signed him to a contract back in August but was among their final roster cuts and joined their practice squad.
In 2019, Williams appeared in nine games and rushed for 235 yards on 49 carries (4.8 YPC) and one touchdown. He also caught five passes for 59 yards.
