NFC Notes: Packers, Saints, Vikings

Packers

Rob Demovsky of ESPN says that based on interviews with multiple sources with knowledge of the process, it can be deciphered that Packers GM Brian Gutenkunst was the one who made the decision to draft QB Jordan Love in round one and not HC Matt LaFleur.

Even so, LaFleur was clearly aware that this was a possibility.

“Matt was on the [phone] line with us and understood where I was coming from,” said Gutekunst after the draft. “I think it was one of those things where, again, with a second-year head coach, I certainly wasn’t going to give him a player he didn’t want.”

“It’s not something we anticipated. It kind of fell to us, and we were excited about that. I know a lot of people will look at this as not a move for the immediate, and I understand that, but the balance of the immediate and the long term is something that I have to consider, and that’s why we did it.

Demovsky says those who know Rodgers believe he’ll be irritated by the decision to draft Love. One source tells Demovsky that Rodgers would be “irate.”

Although a separate source tells Demovsky this could light a fire under Rodgers.

Saints

New Saints QB Jameis Winston explained that the decision to join New Orleans included the opportunity to learn and work with Drew Brees.

“Being a quarterback, you have to be a student of the game, so now I actually get a chance to dive into that more. I actually have a Hall of Fame quarterback that I’m learning from opposed to trying to learn by myself, or use Google,” said Winston, via Amie Just of NOLA.com.

Vikings

  • Chris Tomasson, citing a league source, reports that  “anything is possible” in regards to the Vikings re-signing free-agent G Josh Kline.
  • However, Tomasson adds that Kline is in “no rush” to sign, considering the uncertainty regarding the 2020 NFL season.
