NFC South Notes: Buccaneers, Falcons, Panthers, Saints

Buccaneers

  • Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller says no one at the Combine knows what the Buccaneers are going to do at quarterback.

Falcons

  • Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller says multiple agents have told him the Falcons are looking at running backs on the second day of the draft to set up workouts and meetings.

  • Iowa DE A.J. Epenesa said he met with the Falcons at the Combine. (Thor Nystrom)

Panthers

  • According to Bleacher Report’s Mike Freeman, other teams aren’t buying that the Panthers are moving forward with QB Cam Newton and think Carolina will target Titans QB Ryan Tannehill in free agency. 
  • CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones said on the Rotoworld Football Podcast that Newton would not be able to pass a physical right now, though he might be able to at the start of the league year in a few weeks. 
  • Jones adds he knows for a fact that Newton is happy in Carolina and wants to stay, meaning he probably would play even without an extension or guarantees in 2020. 
  • Jones doesn’t think the Panthers will seriously consider trading up in the draft given how many holes they have. 
  • Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller writes that Auburn DT Derrick Brown is a name often connected to the Panthers by area scouts. 
  • The Panthers hired LSU offensive analyst DJ Mangas as an offensive assistant. (Joseph Person)

Saints

  • Saints GM Mickey Loomis said there have been no talks have happened with free agent QB Drew Brees‘ camp yet but the goal is to get a new deal done before the start of free agency on March 18. (Katherine Terrell)
  • Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller writes that the Saints are persistently mentioned as a landing spot for Utah State QB Jordan Love in the first round. 
  • Miller also says the Saints are expected to target a receiver after the first round because of the depth of the class.
