NFC West Notes: Cardinals, 49ers, Rams

Cardinals

49ers

49ers WR coach Wes Welker says they’d like to use Deebo Samuel in the slot but would like him to lose a few pounds first.

“I love his size and I love his physicality and everything, but we’re still going to want to be able to use him on some of those plays were you really want him to get in and out of those breaks,” Welker said via NBC Sports’ Matt Maiocco. “The lighter you are when you’re doing that, the better off you’re going to be.”

Rams

Ram DE Dante Fowler has his sights set on earning a long-term deal from the Rams this year.

“I’m just going to go out there and bust my tail and try to be the best player I can be on and off the field so I can try to figure out a way to stay here,” Fowler said via Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times.

  • NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport says the Rams will likely no longer lean on RB Todd Gurley as much as they have the past two seasons: “The days of Todd Gurley just being the straight-up, every-down bell cow are probably over, just based on his knee, his age, the position, the amount of carries he’s had.”
  • This offseason was the first in which Rams QB Jared Goff was eligible for an extension, but he says he’s not concerned about when the deal gets done: “It’ll take care of itself. Keep playing well, we’ll be fine.” (Albert Breer)
