Nate Taylor of the Athletic reports that the Chiefs expect Kareem Hunt to be suspended six games for violating the NFLโs personal-conduct policy following the conclusion of the league’s investigation into the February incident involving a young woman.
After TMZ Sports posted the video of Hunt, the Chiefs made the decision to send Hunt home. Multiple league sources with knowledge of the situation tell Taylor that Hunt cried in front of his coaches and members of the front office and apologized and pleaded to the Chiefs to reconsider their decision.
โIt really felt like a funeral,โ a source tells Taylor.
Multiple sources tell Taylor that while the Chiefs knew video evidence of the altercation existed, the NFL told them to stop pursuing it later in February once the league began its investigation. However, the NFL was unable to secure the video.
Taylor reports that the Chiefs asked Hunt multiple times to be completely truthful about what happened that night and told them: โI never left the (hotel) room. I didnโt do a thing.โ
On Friday, the Chiefs specifically mentioned that Hunt was โnot truthfulโ with them and had he been honest with them, they would have pursued every option available to ensure he remained in Kansas City.
A team source who spoke to Taylor says that the Chiefs anticipate that multiple teams will attempt to sign Hunt should he clear waivers on Monday.
The NFL placed Hunt on the commissioner’s exempt list before the Chiefs announced his release Friday. Even if Hunt it claimed, he would be ineligible to play until Roger Goodell removes him from the list.
Hunt, 23, is a former third-round pick of the Chiefs back in 2017. He’s currently in the second year of his four-year, $3.263-million contract and set to make base salaries of $555,000 and $645,000 over the next two years of the agreement.
In 2018, Hunt has appeared in 11 games for the Chiefs and rushed for 824 yards on 181 carries (4.6 YPC) to go along with 26 receptions for 378 yards receiving and 14 total touchdowns.
