ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the Minnesota Vikings have made the decision to place their franchise tag on LB Chad Greenway instead of WR Sidney Rice or DE Ray Edwards.
NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora adds that the Vikings will not use their transition tag on either Rice or Edwards and plan to re-sign Rice.
The transition tags wouldn’t help their chances of retaining Rice or Edwards because other teams could sign them away with a competitive offer.
Last week the Vikings were reported to be leaning towards Greenway because of his impact on the teams defense. Minnesota will likely try to retain Rice so that they will have another offensive weapon other than Adrian Peterson but that may be easier said than done. On the market, Rice will have plenty of interested teams to choose from and most of those teams will have a better shot at going deep into the playoffs next year than the Vikings will.
