NFL Notes: Dolphins, Falcons, Saints

Dolphins

  • According to Adam Beasley, the belief throughout football is that the Dolphins franchised WR Jarvis Landry not because they want to retain him for the 2018 season, but because they want to try to trade him.
  • Beasley adds that Landry told associates last month that he doubted the Dolphins would ever sign him to a long-term contract.
  • Last week, Beasley looked at some potential trade partners for Landry including the Ravens, 49ers and Browns.

Falcons

Falcons WR/KR Andre Roberts told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he’s hoping to be back in Atlanta next year, but admitted that it’s likely he’ll test the free agent market.

I believe I will be a free agent this year,” Roberts said. “Just like last year and the year before that. I’m understanding of it.

“I would love to be back in Atlanta,” Roberts said. “I’m sure my agent will talk to the upper management in Atlanta and see where they are at. That will all come down when it’s due time.

Saints

Nick Underhill of the Advocate offers a blueprint for the Saints’ upcoming offseason.

  • Atop the Saints’ to-do list is, of course, re-signing QB Drew Brees. Underhill says that the Saints bringing Brees back “almost feels like a formality at this point.”
  • Underhill believes the Saints should tender restricted offers to WR Willie Snead and CB Delvin Breaux.
  • Some areas where the Saints could make some additions, according to Underhill include finding someone to cover tight ends and adding a slot cornerback and an offensive weapon.
  • Even though a good portion of TE Coby Fleener‘s contract became guaranteed last month, Underhill says it still may not ensure he’ll be back next season, given that he’ll count $8 million against the salary cap.
  • Underhill points out that if veteran OT Zach Strief retires, New Orleans would gain $2.75 million of cap room.
