Odell Beckham Won’t Play Without Long-Term Extension

Ian Rapoport reported Monday morning that Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. will not suit up for the Giants or any other team this year without a new long-term deal in place.

“Odell Beckhamย is not going to set foot on the field without a new contract agreed to, whether theย Giantsย or whether anyone else,” Rapoport said.

At the owners meeting on Sunday,ย Giants owner John Mara told reporters that no player is “untouchable” in a trade for them after a disappointing season.

“I can’t answer that one way or the other,” Mara said when asked if he could see a scenario in which Beckham isn’t with the Giants in 2018. “I mean we’re certainly not shopping him, if that’s what you’re asking (laughs). But when you’re coming off a season where you’re 3-13 and played as poorly as we played, I wouldn’t say anyone’s untouchable.

Mara did, however, add that tradingย Beckham is “not a scenario I would like to see happen.”

Last we heard regarding Beckman and an extension,ย Mike Garafoloย reported that Beckham has told some people that he’s seeking as much as $20 million per year as part of a long-term commitment.

“I know that Odell Beckham has told some people that he wants some really significant numbers,” Garafolo said. “... It’s not gonna be top quarterback money, because top quarterback money is going through the roof.

“… He’s in the 20s. From what he has told people close to him, he wants to be in the low 20s.”

However, Garafolo can’t see the Giants offering this kind of money, considering that Antonio Brown is currently the high-water mark at $17 million per year.ย Garafolo also questions how Beckham Jr could force the team’s hand in negotiations to offer close to $20 million per year.

Beckham, 25, was taken with the No. 12 overall pick by the Giants back in 2014. He played out the final year of his four-year, $10,406,198 contract but the Giants picked up his fifth-year option last year.

Beckham stands to make a base salary of $8,459,000 for the 2018 season.

In 2017, Beckham Jr’s season was cut short when he suffered a season-ending injury. He caught 25 passes for 302 yards receiving and three touchdowns over the course of four games.

We’ll have more regarding a new deal for Beckham as the news is available.
