According to Joseph Person, the Panthers expect DE Mario Addison, S Tre Boston and G Greg Van Roten to test free agency.
All three have come up as potential candidates that Carolina would reportedly like to bring back at the right price. However, given the Panthers are looking at a rebuild, it makes sense for all three to see what else is out there.
Both Addison and Boston have been linked to the Redskins, where a number of former coaches including HC Ron Rivera have landed.
The Bills have also come up as a team to watch for Addison, as there are strong connections with former Panthers coaches in Buffalo. While Addison will test the market, Carolina is hoping to find a middle ground with him.
Van Roten’s name came up Tuesday in connection with the Jets. He could sign a deal for as much as $8-$10 million a year, though it’s worth noting Van Roten would reportedly like to remain in Carolina.
Boston, 27, is a former fourth-round pick of the Panthers back in 2014. He was in the final year of his four-year, $2,625,468 contract when the Panthers cut him in 2017.
Boston later caught on with the Chargers shortly after the 2017 draft. He agreed to a one-year contract with the Cardinals for the 2018 season.
Last year, Boston caught on with the Panthers again, signing during training camp on a one-year deal worth $3 million.
In 2019, Boston appeared in all 16 games for the Panthers and recorded 68 tackles, three interceptions and 11 pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 13 safety out of 86 qualifying players.
Addison, 32, originally signed on with the Bears as an undrafted free agent out of Troy back in 2011. He lasted just a few months in Chicago before he was waived and later claimed off of waivers by the Colts.
After a brief stint with the Redskins in 2012, the Panthers signed him to their practice squad and later gave him a two-year extension in 2014. He played out the final year of his three-year, $22.5 million contract and is now in line to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
In 2019, Addison appeared in 15 games for the Panthers and recorded 34 tackles, 9.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 70 edge defender out of 108 qualifying players.
Van Roten, 30, originally signed on with the Packers as an undrafted free agent out of Pennsylvania back in 2012. He was, unfortunately, released coming out of the preseason but later signed on to the Packers’ practice squad.
After the Packers moved on from Van Roten in 2014, he had a brief stint with the Seahawks before eventually signing on with the Jaguars in February of 2017. Unfortunately, Jacksonville cut Van Roten loose after the draft and he eventually signed a one-year contract with the Panthers.
As a restricted free agent, Van Roten instead signed a two-year extension with Carolina ahead of the 2018 season.
In 2019, Van Roten started 11 games for the Panthers at left guard before landing on injured reserve. He was rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 23 guard out of 80 qualifying players.
