The Carolina Panthers are currently find themselves in a terrible cap situation and a big reason for this is the amount of money they’ve committed to the running back position.
Even after Jonathan Stewart restructured his current deal, the Panthers are projected to be over the cap byย $10 million. DeAngelo Williams has been rumored to be a potential capย casualty, but most likely later in the season.
Despite the obvious concerns, newย Panthersย general manager Dave Gettleman seemed fairly optimistic that they would be able to retain both players.
“Can we keep both of them? Again, decisions have to be made,” said Gettleman, via NFL.com. “I don’t see why not.ย The first thing we have to do is make March 12 and get there. It’s a puzzle.ย There’s obviously going to have to be some work done. It’s no secret. The bottom line is everybody knows we’re over the cap and we’ve got to get there.”
Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.com writes that can’t see the Panthers having both of them on their roster to start the 2013, despite Gettleman’s comments.
There’s no question that someone will have to take a pay cut at some point andย players such Jon Beason,ย James Andersonย andย Chris Gamble are some fairly obvious candidates. Things won’t get any better next season, as they already have a staggeringย $139 million committed towards their 2014 salary cap.
