ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss mentioned over the weekend that Patriots FS Devin McCourty is a “prime candidate” for an early contract extension this offseason.
McCourty, 26, has just one year remaining on his rookie contract and will make justย $920,000 for the 2014 season, despite being the Patriots best defensive back.ย In fact,ย Pro Football Focus hasย McCourty rated as theย No. 1 overall safety in league this season by a decent margin.
As things stand right now, New England doesn’t have a ton of cap space to work with and they will also need to make some decisions regarding free agents-to-beย CBย Aqib Talib, ILB Brandon Spikes, WR Julian Edelman and RB LeGarrette Blount.ย
Ifย McCourty is willing to offer them a discount on a long-term deal it could be worth considering given that he will almost certainly be a highly sought after free agent a year from now.
