According to Field Yates, the Patriots have placed FB James Develin on injured reserve.
Develin is a Pro Bowl fullback and a key part of the Patriots’ offense, so this is a bigger loss than it appears. Develin could be eligible to be designated to return from injured reserve later in the season depending on what the Patriots decide to do.
Both first-round WR N’Keal Harry and OT Isaiah Wynn are also on injured reserve. New England can only bring back two players from IR.
Develin, 31, wound up signing on with the Bengals as an undrafted free agent out of Brown back in 2010. He spent just over two years in Cincinnati before he was waived at the start of the 2012 season.
The Patriots later signed him to their practice squad and brought him back on a two-year contract in 2017. Develin was set to make a base salary of $800,000 for the 2018 season when he signed a two-year extension through the 2020 season.
In 2019, Develin has appeared in two games for the Patriots and carried the ball twice for three yards. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 6 fullback out of 11 qualifying players.
