Jim McBride of the Boston Globe reports that the Patriots are placing TE Devin Asiasi on the COVID-19 list after he tested positive and releasing WR Devin Smith.
McBride notes that Asiasi is vaccinated.
Asiasi, 23, is a former third-round pick of the Patriots in 2020. He’s currently in the second year of his four-year, $4,272,857 contract that includes a $892,962 signing bonus.
In 2020, Asiasi appeared in nine games for the Patriots and caught two passes for 39 yards receiving and one touchdown.
Smith, 30, is a former second-round pick of the Jets back in 2015. He was entering the final year of his four-year, $5.872 million rookie contract when the Jets waived him with an injury designation.
Smith caught on with the Cowboys on a futures deal for 2019 and was limited to appearing in four games before sustaining another injury. He was among Dallas’ final roster cuts last year before signing on with the Patriots.
For his career, Smith has appeared in 18 games for the Jets and Cowboys and caught 15 passes for 248 yards receiving and two touchdowns.
