Field Yates of ESPN reports that the Patriots have converted $1.75 million of G Shaq Mason’s base salary into a signing bonus and in turn, created $1.4 million of cap space.
This move gives the Patriots the room they need to facilitate the trade for WR Mohamed Sanu.
Mason, 26, is a former fourth-round pick of the Patriots back in 2015. He was in the final year of his four-year, $2,723,524 contract when he agreed to a five-year extension worth up to $50 million last year.
Mason’s contract with New England includes $23.5 million guaranteed and close to $30 million paid out over the first three years of the contract.
In 2019, Mason has appeared in seven games for the Patriots and made seven starts for them.
