Patriots Waive WR Malcolm Mitchell

The New England Patriots have placed WR Malcolm Mitchell on waivers Monday, according to Jason La Canfora.

Mitchell underwent a procedure on his knee to aid the healing process after there was talk that his 2018 season could be in jeopardy.

Ian Rapoport reported that the Patriots were attempting to trade Mitchell, but it appears as though there wasn’t a deal to be made.

Mitchell, 25, was taken in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL draft. He signed a four-year, $2.917 million contract that included a $577,992 signing bonus with the Patriots and stands to make base salaries of $630,000 and $720,000 over the next two years.

The Patriots placed Mitchell on injured reserve at the start of the regular season last year before designating him to return. However, New England declined to activate him from the list, which subsequently ended his 2017 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Mitchell will free up $485,502 of available cap space while creating $288,996 in dead money.

In 2016, Mitchell appeared in 14 games for the Patriots and caught 32 passes for 401 yards receiving and four touchdowns.
