Buccaneers & Ravens Have “Serious Interest” In Tyrann Mathieu, Texans Hoping To Keep Him

According to Jason La Canfora, the Texans badly want to keep S Tyrann Mathieu, but the Buccaneers and Ravens have “serious interest.”

The Ravens just released Eric Weddle and Mathieu’s former teammate Tony Jefferson playing safety for them.

Meanwhile, the Buccaneers have hired the Cardinals’ former coaching staff for the most part, so there are obvious ties to Tampa Bay.

Last we heard regarding Mathieu, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reported that the Texans are hoping to re-sign him before the start of free agency and are making efforts to get a deal done. 

However, Wilson added that nothing is imminent or close between the two parties at this point in time and he’s likely to have a “highly competitive” market. 

Mathieu, 26, is a former third-round pick of the Cardinals back in 2013. He was entering the third year of his five-year, $64.1 million contract that included $35 million guaranteed when the Cardinals released him back in March.

The Texans later signed Mathieu one-year contract worth $7 million to go along with incentives.

In 2018, Mathieu appeared in 16 games for the Texans and recorded 89 tackles, three sacks, two interceptions, a fumble recovery and eight pass defense.
