Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that there is a “real possibility” that the Eagles are able to pursue a trade involving QB Nick Foles without having to use the franchise tag on him.
La Canfora mentions that Foles’ contract includes a mutual option that would allow him to pay back $2 million of his $20 million 2019 salary for the right to become a free agent.
However, La Canfora says the Eagles could allow Foles to keep the money and then orchestrate a trade to a team of his liking. From there, Foles could begin working on a new extension with whoever trades for him.
This allows for the Eagles to get a draft pick for him in 2019, rather than wait for the 2020 season to recoup the pick and it would prevent them from having to carry the franchise tag total on their salary cap until he’s traded.
A source with knowledge of the situation indicated to La Canfora that this possibility should not be discounted.
La Canfora mentions that the Jaguars and Dolphins are two teams considered possible suitors for Foles.
Foles, 29, is a former third-round pick of the Eagles back in 2012. Philadelphia traded Foles to the Rams back in 2015 in a deal for QB Sam Bradford and he later signed an extension with the Rams.
Unfortunately, Foles lasted just over a year with the Rams before he was released last summer and later signed by the Chiefs. The Eagles signed Foles to a two-year, $11 million contract that includes $7 million guaranteed this past March.
Foles was set to make a base salary of $4 million in 2018 when he agreed to a restructured contract this offseason.
In 2018, Foles appeared in four games and thrown for 1,192 yards while completing 69.8 percent of his passes to go along with five touchdowns and three interceptions.
