JP Finlay, citing multiple sources close to the situation, reports that Redskins CB Bashaud Breeland will be given a chance to test the free agent market next year, but there’s still a chance he could be back in Washington for the 2018 season.
Although, Finlay expects Breeland to have multiple suitors in free agency.
“I’m just patiently waiting to see whether that’s still with the Washington Redskins or with a new family,” Breeland said. “I understand the business. There’s no hard feelings. I just want to play ball.”
Breeland added that money won’t be the main priority for him in free agency.
“It’s not about the money, it’s about the respect level,” Breeland said. “Me playing, me leaving, it’s about starting to become something that I wanted to be. My vision when I stepped into this league was becoming a dominant corner in this league, someone my team can depend on. I feel like that time is right around the corner.”
Breeland, 25, is a former fourth-round pick of the Redskins back in 2014. He’s currently in the final year of his four-year, $2.706 million contract and stands to make a base salary of $690,000 for the 2017 season before becoming an unrestricted free agent next year.
In 2017, Breeland has appeared in 14 games for the Redskins and recorded 48 tackles, one interception returned for a touchdown and 16 pass defenses. He also contributed 280 kick return yards. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 70 cornerback out of 121 qualifying players.
