Redskins HCย Jay Gruden said Monday that they’ve discussed the possibility of signing QB Colin Kaepernick, but they’re likely to go in a different direction at the position.
“He’s been talked about and discussed but we will probably go a different direction,” Gruden said, per JP Finlay.
Gruden added thatย they aren’t sure they want to bring in someone who would have no familiarity with their offense or coaches, per Les Carpenter.
The Redskins are hosting free agent quarterbacks for tryouts on Tuesday after Colt McCoy suffered a fractured leg during Monday’s game.
However, all indicationsย were thatย Kaepernick wasn’t a serious option for Washington.
Recent reports have said thatย Kaepernick is still working out regularly and hoping to get another shot in the NFL.
A number of teams who have been in need of a quarterback have passed on even bringing him in for a tryout. Beyond that, Kaepernick has a pending collusion lawsuit against the NFL.
Kaepernick, 31, is a former second-round pick of the 49ers back in 2010. He was in the third year of his seven-year, $126.97 million contract that included $61 million guaranteed when reached an agreement with the 49ers on a restructured deal that allowed him to become an unrestricted free agent in 2016.
In 2016, Kaepernick completed 59.2 percent of his passes for 2,241 yards and 16 touchdowns and four interceptions, while adding 468 yards rushing. Pro Football Focus had him rated as the No. 27 quarterback out of 36 qualifying players.
