According to John Keim, the Redskins won’t have free agent interest in either Panthers QB Cam Newton when he’s eventually released or former Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston.
Keim says Washington likes how 2019 first-round QB Dwayne Haskins finished the season and wants to give him a chance to develop in 2020.
While new HC Ron Rivera is intimately familiar with Newton, Keim writes he’s not an option as bringing him in would give Haskins no chance to compete for the starting job.
Keim adds while Washington has done some work on Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa, there’s still a greater chance they pick Ohio State DE Chase Young with the No. 2 overall pick.
As for Newton, Carolina is expected to release him shortly after finalizing new starting QB Teddy Bridgewater‘s deal following his physical. From there, it remains to be seen where the former MVP will land, as the number of starting quarterbacks exceeded the supply of jobs this offseason.
Newton, 30, is a former first-round pick of the Panthers back in 2011. He is entering the fifth year of his six-year, $118.47 million contract that includes $60 million guaranteed and stands to make base salaries of $16.2 million and $18.6 million over the final two years of the agreement.
According to OverTheCap.com, releasing or trading Newton would free up $19.1 of available cap space while creating $2 million in dead money.
In 2019, Newton appeared in two games for the Panthers, completing 50 out of 89 passes for 572 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. He has also rushed five times for -2 yards.
Winston, 26, is a former first-round pick of the Buccaneers back in 2015. He’s set to make a base salary of $20.922 million for the 2019 season under his fifth-year option.
Winston is in line to be an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his NFL career in 2020.
In 2019, Winston appeared in all 16 games for the Buccaneers and completed 60.7 percent of his passes for 5,109 yards, 33 touchdowns and 30 interceptions while rushing for 250 yards and one touchdown.
