According to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, the Dolphins considered other quarterbacks including Colin Kaepernick, Tim Tebow, and Kyle Orton before signing Jay Cutler on Sunday. Although, Salguero adds that some of the options were “eliminated very quickly.”
- Joe Schad reports that other quarterback options that would have received consideration by Miami include Christian Ponder and Robert Griffin III.
Kaepernick almost immediately came up as a potential option for Miami after Ryan Tannehill re-injured his knee a few days ago. However, it quickly became clear that Cutler was their main focus and the two sides were able to reach an agreement on a one-year contract worth up to $13 million.
Given that Tebow and Orton have been out of the NFL for a few years now, it’s surprising to hear that they garnered any consideration from the Dolphins.
Tebow is currently playing baseball in the Mets’ minor league system, but Salguero mentions that HC Adam Gase was the Broncos’ quarterbacks coach during his final year in Denver. Dolphins executive VP Mike Tannenbaum actually traded for Tebow when he was the Jets’ GM several years ago.
Orton retired a few years ago and we’ve posted anything about him since 2015.
In the end, the Dolphins were able to convince Cutler set aside his broadcasting career and it looks like their plan is to get him up-to-speed for the start of the regular season.
Miami does have a proven backup quarterback in Matt Moore in case things don’t go well for Cutler.
