Bengals DT Geno Atkins Done For The Season With A Torn ACL

Update:

Bengals HC Marvin Lewis confirmed that DT Geno Atkins does in fact have a torn ACL and will be out for the remainder of the 2013 season.

Atkins, 26, signed a huge six-year contract worth $56.423 million that includes $31 million guaranteed with the Bengals back in early September. He was set to become an unrestricted free agent following the season, and given that has quickly become one of the best interior defensive lineman in the league, it made sense for them get him taken care of while they had the available cap space.

Brandon Thompson filled in for Atkins while he was out, so he should see an expanded role moving forward.

Mike Silver of the NFL Network reports that a Bengals source has informed him that “early indications” are that DT Geno Atkins has a torn ACL.

Atkins left Thursday night’s game with a right knee injury after going down awkwardly in the second quarter. He was later carted off the field. All indications pointed to it being a pretty serious knee injury, so we’ll have to see if does in fact have a season-ending knee injury.

We’ll have more as the news is available.
