Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald reports that the Patriots have “remained in general contact” with free agent TE Dustin Keller since he visited with the team a few months ago.
Howe mentions that today’s release of OL R.J. Mattes is not an indication that Keller could be signed, even though it leaves them with an option roster spot.
The Patriots also brought in veteran TE Jermichael Finley for a visit as well, so it’s clear that they have their eye on the available free agent options.
As things stand right now, New England has Rob Gronkowski, Michael Hoomanawanui, D.J. Williams and Justin Jones as their top-four tight ends.
