Vikings Will Start Josh Freeman Against The Giants In Week 7

Update:

HC Leslie Frazier told reporters that Christian Ponder will be Freeman’s backup and doesn’t anticipate any scenario where Ponder is not on the roster, per Tom Pelissero.

Tom Pelissero of USA Today reports that “all indications” are that the Vikings start QB Josh Freeman this week.

  • Pelissero adds that the Vikings quarterback pecking order on Wednesday was: Josh Freeman, Christian Ponder and Matt Cassel in that order.

Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reports that the Minnesota Vikings are “seriously considering” starting Josh Freeman at quarterback on Monday against the Giants.

  • Glazer adds that the Vikings are “pushing to put him in this game.”

HC Leslie Frazier told reporters on Monday that he expected to name a starter by Wednesday, so this report would coincide with that timeline.

The Vikings reportedly offered Freeman a two-year contract, which is a pretty clear indication that they expect to see what he can do for them this season. Matt Cassel didn’t do anything to persuade the Vikings against turning to Freeman as soon as they felt he was up to speed regarding their offensive system.

Cassel finished last weekend’s game 32-of-44 passes for 241 yards to go along with one touchdown and two interceptions. The Vikings suffered an embarrassing 35-10 home-loss to the Panthers, and despite Cassel’s struggles, it appeared as though they weren’t turning to Christian Ponder unless an injury occurred.
