Ian Rapoport reports that Seahawks CB Richard Sherman has said goodbye to his teammates over the past 24 hours and heย won’t be back with the team. Rapoport adds that sources close to Shermanย say nothing is set in stone and there has been no official word. However, this is clearly something to watch in the coming days.
- Tom Pelissero reports thatย Sherman is scheduled to meet with Seahawks HC Pete Carroll and GM John Schneider later today to discuss his future
This comes after some of Sherman’s teammates postedย cryptic goodbyes on social media.
Sherman’s name has surfaced in trade rumors over the past year or so, but it’s unlikely Seattle would be able to trade him, given that he’s still recovering from a season-ending Achilles tear and would have to pass a physical.
Sherman, 29, is a former fifth-round pick of the Seahawks back in 2011. He is entering the final of his five-year, $58.789 million contract that includes $40 million guaranteed and set to make a base salary of $11 million for the 2018 season.
According toย OverTheCap.com, releasing or trading Sherman will free up $11 millionย of available cap space while creating $2.2 million in dead money.
In 2017, Sherman appeared in nine games and recorded 35 tackles, two interceptions and seven pass defenses for the Seahawks.ย Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 33 cornerback out of 120 qualifying players.
We’ll have more regarding Sherman and the Seahawks as the news is available.
