According to Ian Rapoport, former Texans DC Romeo Crennel will remain on the team’s coaching staff in a “key role” on defense.
The Texans recently made the decision to promote DL coach Anthony Weaver to defensive coordinator, replacing Crennel.
One report said that Crennel was at least mulling over the possibility of calling it a career. However, it appears as though he’ll be back for the 2020 season.
Crennel, 72, began his NFL coaching career with the Giants back in 1981 as their special teams coach. He later took jobs with the Patriots, Jets and Brown before returning to New England in 2001 as their defensive coordinator.
After four seasons with the Patriots, Crennel was hired as the Browns’ head coach. Unfortunately, he was later fired after four years with the team.
Crennel spent a few years with the Chiefs as their defensive coordinator and interim head coach before the Texans hired as their defensive coordinator in 2014. Houston made the decision to promote Mike Vrabel in 2017 before moving Crennel back to coordinator in 2018.
In 2019, the Texans’ defense ranked No. 13 best in total yards allowed, No. 14 in points allowed, No. 9 in rushing yards allowed and No. 15 in passing yards allowed.
