Ryan Mallett Unlikely To Be An Option For Cleveland?

Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer writes that the Browns are not expected to pursue a trade for Patriots backup QB Ryan Mallett.

Cabot adds that Michael Vick is unlikely to end up in Cleveland, should even be available. She also mentions that Alex Smith and Matt Flynn could be potential trade options for the Browns in the next few weeks.

It’s expected that the Browns will look to reinforce the quarterback position this offseason by bringing in someone to compete with Brandon Weeden for the starting job.

Mallet has been consistently mentioned as a potential option for the Browns since they hired Michael Lombardi as VP of Player Personnel. Since taking the job, there hasn’t been any real indication that he’s even being considered, so it’s safe to say that this idea is being fueled solely by speculation.

New offensive coordinator Norv Turner has said that he would like to see what Weeden can do, but it would be surprising for the Browns to not bring in another quarterback to compete with him in training camp. Alex Smith seems like a real option, but we’ll have to see if they’re willing to part with any amount of compensation for him.
