According to Field Yates, the Saints have officially placed DT Sheldon Rankins on injured reserve and signed DT T.Y. McGill to the roster to take his place.
Rankins suffered a severe ankle injury this week that ends his season with three games to go.
It’s the third serious injury of Rankins’ young career, as he broke his fibula during his rookie season and started this year on the PUP list following an Achilles injury in last year’s playoffs.
Rankins, 25, is a former first-round pick of the Saints back in 2016. He was entering the final year of his four-year, $12.8 million contract when the Saints picked up his fifth-year option this past April.
Rankins made a base salary of $2.19 million for the 2019 season.
In 2019, Rankins appeared in 10 games for the Saints and recorded 10 tackles and two sacks. He was rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 69 interior defender out of 116 qualifying players.
McGill, 27, originally signed on with the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent out of North Carolina State back in 2015. He lasted just a few months in Seattle before he was claimed off of waivers by the Colts.
McGill had had brief stints with the Browns, Chiefs, Chargers and Eagles before the Chargers claimed him off waivers near the end of 2018.
Los Angeles waived McGill at the end of the preseason and he recently signed on with the Redskins before being released again. McGill returned to the Chargers again in October before being waived a few weeks ago.
In 2018, McGill appeared in two games and recorded three tackles and no sacks.
