Steelers Place K Chris Boswell On IR, Sign K Matt McCrane

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced Friday that they’ve placed K Chris Boswell on injured reserve and signed K Matt McCrane.

Boswell, 27, originally signed on with the Texans as an undrafted free agent out of Rice back in 2014. He was among Houston’s final roster cuts coming out of the preseason and signed on to their practice squad.

The Texans wound up cutting him after a week and he eventually signed a futures contract with the Giants. He was, again, among the team’s final roster cuts but was signed and waived again shortly after.

The Steelers signed him to a two-year deal in 2015 and he brought him back on a futures contract the following year. Pittsburgh placed the second-round restricted tender on Boswell during the offseason only to agree to a four-year extension worth just under $20 million.

In 2018, Boswell has appeared in 15 games for the Steelers and converted 13 of 20 field goal attempts (65 percent) to go along with 43 of 48 extra point tries (89.6 percent).

McCrane, 24, wound up signing on with the Cardinals as an undrafted free agent out of Kansas State back in May. He signed a three-year, $1.71 million contract with the Cardinals and was set to make a base salary of $485,000 for the 2018 season when he was waived coming out of the preseason.

The Raiders signed him to a contract a few weeks ago, but elected to cut him loose earlier in the week. He later had a brief stint with the Cardinals.

In 2018, McCrane has appeared in four games for the Raiders and Cardinals and converted 5 of 9 field goal attempts (55.6 percent) to go along with all eight extra point tries.
