Texans Officially Cut 22 Players To Get Down To 53-Man Limit

The Houston Texans have begun the process of trimming their roster down to 53 players. Here’s the list of roster cuts up to this point:

  5. OT Jeff Adams
  6. Dalton Freeman (Injured)
  7. CB Robert Nelson
  8. Karim Barton
  9. OLB Tony Washington (Injured)
  10. TE Anthony Denham
  11. DE Ufomba Kamalu
  12. G Chad Slade
  13. TE Eric Tomlinson
  14. RB Kenny Hilliard
  15. CB Terrance Mitchell
  16. ILB Shakeel Rashad
  17. ILB Reshard Cliett
  18. S Antonio Allen
  19. DE Dan Pettinato
  20. WR Cecil Shorts 
  21. DL Akeem Hunt
  22. DL Brandon Dunn

Other roster moves include:

  • Activating DE J.J. Watt and OT Duane Brown from PUP list.

Shorts, 28, is a former is a former fourth-round pick of the Jaguars back in 2011. He played out his rookie contract in Jacksonville before signing on with the Texans as an unrestricted free agent last year.

Shorts was is in the final year of his two-year, $6 million contract that included $2.5 million guaranteed when he agreed to take a $1 million pay cut to remain with the team back in June.

In 2015, Shorts appeared in 11 games and caught 42 passes for 484 yards receiving and two touchdowns.

Allen, 27, is a former seventh-round pick of the Jets back in 2012. He has played out his four-year, $2.1 million rookie contract and was testing the open market as an unrestricted free agent for the first time.

Allen, unfortunately, suffered a season-ending Achilles injury back in August of last year and was subsequently waived with the injury designation before reverting to the Jets injured reserve list.

The Texans signed him to a contract back in March.

In 2014, Allen appeared in 15 games for the Jets and recorded 41 tackles, a half sack, a forced fumble and six pass defenses. Pro Football Focus rated him as the No. 63 cornerback out of 108 qualifying players that year.

Adams, 26, wound up signing on with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent out of Columbia back in 2012. He had brief stints with the Bengals, Dolphins and Titans before being claimed off of waivers by the Texans at the start of the 2014 season.

Houston elected to sign Adams to an extension back in March.

In 2015, Adams appeared in two games for the Texans.

Lee, 23, wound up signing on with the Texans as an undrafted free agent out of South Florida. He was cut, but later returned to the Texans in June.

During his four-year college career at South Florida, Lee recorded 90 tackles, 18.5 tackles for a loss, 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, a recovery and four pass defenses.
