John McClain reports that the Houston Texans will not pursue a trade for Viking WR Percy Harvin or try to sign Mike Wallace during free agency.
Clearly, the Texans are still in need of a solid No. 2 receiver to pair with Andre Johnsonย who will be 32 at the start of the 2013 season. Both Harvin and Wallace could add a much needed explosive element to their passing attack, but they appear to have other plans.
Instead, McClain mentions that they’re focused on re-signing some of their core players like ILB Brian Cushing and DE Antonio Smith.
Cushing, 26, will be entering the final year of his rookie deal and is set to make $3.143 million in 2013. He unfortunately suffered a torn ACL back in October, but it’s safe to assume that the Texans view him as an integral part of their defense in the coming years.
Smith, 31, has a base salary ofย $6 million for next season, so addressing his contract now could actually free up some cap space in the time being. He too is in the final year of his contract.
McClainย adds that the Texans’ “top priority” will be to re-sign FS Glover Quin, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the next few weeks.
Quin, 27, put together a very respectable season for the Texans and is in a great position to secure a reasonable contract on the open market. The Texans, of course, are hoping to prevent themselves from competing with other NFL teams for him.
We have Quin listed as the No. 70 best available free agent in our Top 50 Free Agents list.
