According to Dianna Russini, the Titans have started discussing a new deal for QB Ryan Tannehill to be the team’s starter of the future.
While there’s been some speculation Tannehill would be a candidate for the franchise tag, Russini says Tennessee is considering giving the veteran more than a one-year deal after his performance since being named the starter.
Tannehill has been stellar since taking over as the Titans starting quarterback for Marcus Mariota and helped them to a 5-1 record.
A franchise tag for Tannehill would be projected to cost around $27 million fully guaranteed for the 2020 season.
Tannehill, 31, is a former first-round pick of the Dolphins back in 2012. Miami traded Tannehill to the Titans this offseason for draft compensation.
As a part of the trade, Tannehill reworked his contract to a one-year, $1.875 million deal with the potential for more incentives. He’ll be a free agent following the 2019 season.
In 2019, Tannehill has appeared in eight games and completed 72.7 percent of his passes for 1,602 yards receiving, 12 touchdowns and four interceptions. He has also rushed for 128 yards and three touchdowns.
We’ll have more on Tannehill as the news is available.
