Veteran DL Muhammad Wilkerson Likely To Visit Packers

According to Ian Rapoport, veteran DLย Muhammad Wilkerson is likely to take his first free agent visit to Green Bay and meet with the Packers once his release from the Jets is official.

The Packers have made it clear that they plan to be in on a number of free agents this offseason under new GM Brian Gutekunst and the defense will obviously be a priority for them.

It’s worth mentioning that new Packers DC Mike Pettine coached Wilkerson while in New York back in 2011 and 2012 and helped him make the Pro Bowl.

It’s worth mentioning that signing Wilkerson to a contract won’t impact a team’s 2019 compensatory picks, given that he was released this offseason.

Wilkerson, 27, is a former first-round pick of the Jets back in 2011. He played out his rookie contract with the team and was in line to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason before the Jets used their franchise tag on him last year.

The Jetsย surprisingly locked him up to a five-year, $86 million contract that included $53.5 million guaranteed just before the deadline last year. Wilkerson was set to make base salaries of $16.75 million and $15.25 million over the next two years of the agreement when the Jets announced his release last week.

In 2017, Wilkerson appeared in 13 games for the Jets and recorded 46 tackles, 3.5 sacks, an interception, and four pass defenses.ย Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 50 interior defender out of 122 qualifying players.

We have him featured in our Top 100 ย โ€“ 2018 NFL Free Agents list.
