$11M Of Philip Rivers’ 2017 Base Salary Became Fully Guaranteed Today

Joel Corry of CBS Sports points out that $11 million of Chargers QB Philip Rivers‘ $14 million base salary for the 2017 season became fully guaranteed on Tuesday.

There was some talk a few months ago that the Chargers could consider trading him this offseason. In fact, one rumor surfaced that Rivers was happy with the team’s decision to relocate to Los Angeles and could request to be traded to the 49ers.

However, this was later refuted by both the team and reporters.

The Chargers have maintained that they’re focused on building around him and even elected to keep their offensive coaching staff in place in order to maintain continuity on that side of the ball, despite hiring a new head coach.

Rivers, 35, is a former first-round pick of the Giants back in 2004 but was traded to the Chargers in return for QB Eli Manning. He’ll be entering the third year of his five-year, $99 million contract that includes $65 million guaranteed and set to make a base salary of $14 million for the 2017 season.

In 2016, Rivers appeared in all 16 games for the Chargers and threw for 4,386 while completing 60.4 percent of his passes to go along with 33 touchdowns and 21 interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 19 quarterback out of 34 qualifying players.
