49ers WR Jerome Simpson Suspended Six games

The San Francisco 49ers announced Tuesday that veteran WR Jerome Simpson has been suspended for the first six games of the 2015 season for violating the substance abuse policy.

The probability of a suspension was known when we signed Jerome,” 49ers GM Trent Baalke said in a statement. “Since joining the 49ers, Jerome has proven to be a great teammate. Although he will not be able to participate in the first six weeks of the season, Jerome has done everything asked of him, both on and off the field. We are in full support of the NFL’s decision, and look forward to Jerome’s future contributions to our organization.”

Simpson was previously suspended by the NFL for three games for an incident in which he was arrested for violating a limited drivers license, marijuana possession, and an open bottle.

Even so, San Francisco wound up signing him to a two-year contract worth $1.73 million back in March.

Simpson, 29, hasn’t appeared in an NFL since the 2013 season when he caught 48 receptions for 726 yards receiving and a touchdown.
