Buccaneers Pick Up WR Mike Evans’ Fifth-Year Option

Buccaneers GM Jason Licht told reporters on Monday that they’ve picked up WR Mike Evans‘ fifth-year option, per Greg Auman.

“I hope Mike is a Buc for life,” Licht said.

This is among the easiest calls to make in regards to fifth-year options. Evans has quickly become one of the best receivers in the NFL and is now in line to be among the highest-paid players at his position.

The fifth-year option is guaranteed only for injury and won’t prevent them from working on a long-term extension over the next year.

Evans, 23, is a former No. 1 overall pick of the Buccaneers back in 2014. He’s currently in the final year of his four-year, $14.631 million contract and stands to make a base salary of $690,000 for the 2016 season.

In 2016, Evans appeared in all 16 games for the Buccaneers and caught 96 passes for 1,321 yards receiving and 12 touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 2 receiver out of 115 qualifying players.
