Buccaneers Restructure Contracts Of Vincent Jackson & G Carl Nicks

Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.com reports that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have created an extra $18 million in cap space for 2013 by restructuring the contracts of WR Vincent Jackson and G Carl Nicks.

The Bucs basically gave them extra roster bonuses this year, which shifted the guaranteed money that both players had coming to them next season to their 2012 cap.

Jackson had $13 million in base salary coming his way next season, but Tampa Bay took $12.16 million of that number and converted it into a 2012 roster bonus that will be paid out for the remainder of the contract. Jackson now only counts $3.472 million against their 2013 cap.

As for Nicks, he had a $12.5 million base salary next season, but the team took $11.785 million of that number and turned it into a 2012 bonus.

The Buccaneers do have some players to address during free agency, mainly DE Michael Bennett, but these moves are likely to afford them the extra cap space to pursue some upgrades to their roster if they determine that there’s adequate value in the market.
