Chargers GM Tom Telesco said Saturday that he called veteran P Mike Scifres to inform him that he’s being released after they used a sixth-round pick on a punter, per Michael Gehlken.
“He’s a true pro,” said Chargers head coach Mike McCoy.“When people ask what it means to be a Charger, I’ll point to Mike Scifres. Thank you Mike. We’re going to miss you.”
The decision to draft Drew Kaser in the sixth-round left him as an obvious cap casualty.
Scifres, 35, was in the final year of his six-year, $20 million contract that included $9 million guaranteed. He was set to make a base salary of $3,562,500 for the 2016 season.
According to OverTheCap.com, releasing him will free up $3,562,500 in available cap space while creating no dead money.
Scifres is a former fifth-round pick of the Chargers back in 2003. He’s spent all 13 years of his NFL career in San Diego.
