Albert Breer reports that the Colts have been granted permission to interview Texans defensive coordinator Mike Vrabel.
The list of interview candidates for the Colts includes:
Vrabel, 42, began his coaching career with Ohio State as their linebackers coach back in 2011. After the years with the Buckeyes, Vrabel was hired by the Texans as their linebackers coach and promoted to defensive coordinator last year.
In 2017, the Texans ranked No. 20 in yards allowed, No. 32 in points allowed, No. 13 in rushing yards and No. 24 in passing yards.
Adam Schefter reports that the Colts have requested permission to interview Patriots OC Josh McDaniels for their head coaching job.
- Mike Garafolo reports that the Colts have requested permission to interview Panthers DC Steve Wilks.
Wilks, 48, began his NFL coaching career with the Bears as their defensive backs coach back in 2006. He spent two years with the Chargers before following Ron Rivera to Carolina as their defensive backs coach. The Panthers promoted him to assistant head coach in 2015 and then to defensive coordinator last year after Sean McDermott took the Bills’ job.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Colts are expected to interview Patriots OC Josh McDaniels, Chiefs OC Matt Nagy, and Chiefs ST coach Dave Toub among others for their head coach position.
Sources close to Colts HC Chuck Pagano tell Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports that he expects to be relieved of his duties after the season.
Multiple reports have said for a while now that Pagano was likely out in Indianapolis after the season, so this isn’t much of a surprise.
La Canfora points out Colts GM Chris Ballard has strong ties to two members of the Chiefs’ coaching staff, given the time he spent in Kansas City before departing this past January, including special teams coordinator Dave Toub and offensive coordinator Matt Nagy.
Although, La Canfora says that Colts owner Jim Irsay may try to lure a big-name head coach to Indianapolis to get the franchise back on track and sell some tickets while QB Andrew Luck works his way back from shoulder surgery. While that could be Irsay’s plan, La Canfora adds that his ability to land a top-tier head coaching candidate is in question, given the uncertainty of Luck’s shoulder.
Ian Rapoport confirms that Toub and Nagy are two names to watch along with Patriots OC Josh McDaniels.
Pagano, 57, was hired by the Colts back in 2012. During his six years in Indianapolis, Pagano led the team to a record of 52-43 (54.7 percent) and three playoff appearances including a championship appearance in 2014.
We’ll have more regarding the Colts as the news is available.
