CB Stanford Routt Clears Waivers

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that CB Stanford Routt has cleared waivers and is now free to sign with a team of his choosing.

We’ll have more updates as begins to setup meeting with potential suitors.

Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star reports that the Kansas City Chiefs have waived CB Stanford Routt to make room for recently signed DT  Shaun Smith.

This move comes as a bit of a surprise, but it is worthy noting that Pro Football Focus has Routt listed as the No. 85 best cornerback out of 101. Routt’s all-around game has dropped off this season, which is clearly disappointing given that he factored into their decision to allow Brandon Carr to leave via free agency during the offseason.

Brian McIntyre of Yahoo Sports adds that Routt has a $10 million option due in 2013.

Javier Arenas figures to take over as the team’s starting cornerback opposite of Brandon Flowers. Routt will have to clear waivers before he’s free to sign with a new team.

Teicher also reports that the Chiefs have made the decision to promote Gary Gibbs to defensive coordinator.
