Colts Scheduling Second Interview With Chiefs Exec. Chris Ballard, KC Bracing To Lose Ballard

Update:

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Colts are bringing in Chiefs director of personnel Chris Ballard back for a second interview.

  • According to Schefter, the Chiefs are bracing to lose Ballard to the Colts, who will interview again for the job on Sunday.

This if the first candidates the Colts have lined up for a follow-up interview since they finished interviewing six candidates.

Jason La Canfora reports that the Colts are “definitely intrigued” by Chiefs executive Chris Ballard for their GM job.

Interestingly enough, La Canfora says that Ballard actually prefers to hire Chiefs ST coach Dave Toub as the team’s head coach, which makes some sense, considering their time together with Kansas City.

Mike Garafolo of NFL Media reported on Friday that the Colts are expected to make a decision on who they’ll hire as GM in the next week or so, and possibly by the Super Bowl.

While early indications were that the Colts would likely promote Jimmy Raye III to GM, Garafolo mentions that Ballard is likely the leading candidate for the job right now.

Garafolo said that candidates for the job would speak with Colts HC Chuck Pagano and hopefully attempt to develop a relationship with him moving forward.

The Colts have officially interviewed six candidates in total for their vacancy including Ballard, Raye III, Packers executive Eliot Wolf , Seahawks executives Trent Kirchner and Scott Fitterer, and Vikings assistant GM George Paton.

The main selling point with the Colts’ GM position is the fact that they can offer candidates the ability to build the team around Luck, which isn’t an opportunity that comes with every GM vacancy.

Toub, 54, began his NFL coaching career with the Eagles in 2001 as their special teams quality control coach. The Bears later hired him as their full-time special teams coach from 2004-2012 and notably took part in developing KR/PR Devin Hester.

The Chiefs hired Toub as their special teams coordinator in 2013.

We’ll have more regarding the Colts’ GM search as the news is available.
