Cowboys Options Outside Of Nick Foles Include Josh McCown & Jimmy Clausen

Mary Kay Cabot reports that the Cowboys are, in fact, interested in Browns QB Josh McCown as a backup quarterback.

• Ian Rapoport of NFL Media specifically mentioned McCown and a group of free agents including Jimmy Clausen as alternative quarterback options for Dallas, so this could be a situation to look out for.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Cowboys have other options at quarterback outside of just Nick Foles.

• Meanwhile, Adam Schefter reports that Foles now has “a couple options”, including Dallas, and a decision is likely to come today or tomorrow.

Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones said the team has had talks with the agent for Foles as a potential replacement for Kellen Moore, per Todd Archer.

According to Jones, the Cowboys have other options they are pursuing as well via a potential trade.

Foles, 27, is a former third-round pick of the Eagles back in 2012. After three years in Philadelphia, Foles was sent to the Rams in a trade from the Eagles that shipped Sam Bradford to Philadelphia. He had one year remaining on his rookie contract when the Rams signed him to a two-year, $24 million extension back in August of last year.

In 2015, Foles completed 56.4 percent of his passes for 2,052 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 36 quarterback out of 37 qualifying players. We have him featured in our Best Available Free Agents list.

McCown, 36, signed a three-year, $14 million contract that includes $6.25 million guaranteed with the Browns back in March of last year. He stands to make base salaries of $4.375 million (2016) and $3.625 million (2017) over the duration of the agreement.

According to OverTheCap.com, trading McCown will free up $3,708,332 in available cap space while creating $1,333,334 in dead money.

In 2015, McCown appeared in eight games and threw for 2,109 yards while completing 63.7 percent of his passes to go along with 12 touchdowns and four interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 29 quarterback out of 38 qualifying players.
