Report: Florida Gators Hiring Jim McElwain As Next Head Coach

Update:

Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports is reporting that that the University of Florida and Colorado State HC Jim McElwain are in the “latter stages” of negotiating a deal that would make him the Gators next head coach.

  • Forde adds that McElwain’s current deal includes a $7.5 million buyout, which is not expected to to be significantly reduced in talks between the two sides.
  • McElwain could be introduced as early as Wednesday, according to Forde.

Recent reports has mentioned that Florida could target Eagles HC Chip Kelly or Patriots OC Josh McDaniels. for the job, but the idea was later shot down by Jason Cole of the Bleacher Report.

————–

Mark Farzetta of CBS Philly reported Monday that Florida was expected to contact Kelly as early as Tuesday to gauge his interest in the job.

Jeremy Foley is running the search and is reportedly not interested in targeting NFL coaches due to the type of salary it would take to lure them away from their current jobs.

Cole mentions that Foley is not interested in either Kelly due to the show-cause penalty, even though it’s set to expire in the coming weeks. Arizona HC Rich Rodriguez has reportedly been removed from Florida’s list of potential targets for NCAA violations as well.

As for McDaniels, Cole points out that his lack of recruiting experience and the other issues that come with taking on the head coaching position. Cole mentions that McDaniels is the type of offensive coach they would like to bring in, but there appears to be concerns about him handling all the responsibilities that come with this job.

This is just the start of head-coaching rumors, so I’m sure we’ll be hearing much more about NFL coaches possibly leaving for other jobs.
