Free Agent CB Chris Houston Expects To Be Medically Cleared By August Or September

Free agent CB Chris Houston expects the toe injury that led to the Lions releasing him a few weeks ago to be medically cleared by August or September.

“It was something that had to be done, because playing football when you’re constantly hurt is not fun,” Houston said, via the Austin American-Statesman. “Health comes first. If I’m able to get back to 100 percent, I know I’ll have another opportunity somewhere.”

Houston suffered a similar injury as he was preparing play football for the University of Texas. The injury cost him that opportunity as the Longhorns turned their attention to S Michael Griffin instead.

Same surgery I just had,” said Houston.

The operation Houston underwent was described as being a reconstruction of his big left toe. This fits with recent reports that the Lions were concerned about that Houston’s has a degenerative condition in his foot that could ultimately prevent him from ever being the same.

Houston, 29, hasn’t found any reported interest since he was cut loose, and it appears as though he may have to wait until the season is underway before meeting with NFL teams.

Last year, he appeared in 12 games for the Lions and recorded 44 tackles, two interceptions and 10 passes defensed. Pro Football Focus had him rated as the No. 96 cornerback in the league out of 110 qualifying players in 2013.

We have Houston tentatively listed as the No. 4 player in our Top 50 – Best Available Free Agents list.
