Lions May Fire HC Jim Schwartz & GM Martin Mayhew If They Miss The Playoffs

This news is from Monday night, so our apologies for passing this along a little later than normal.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Monday night that Lions head coach Jim Schwartz could be if the Lions end up missing the playoffs.

According to Rapoport, changes could extend beyond just Schwartz and include GM Martin Mayhew as well. The Lions reportedly believe they have enough talent to compete, so any result other than making the playoffs is likely to result in front office and coaching changes.

Detroit has dropped four of their last six games and are now in serious danger of losing the NFC North division to the Bears or Packers. If they end up missing the playoffs, this would be the fourth time they have done so in the past five season under Schwartz.

The Lions would need some serious help in order to make the playoffs after they lost to the Ravens on Monday. Should the Lions fire Schwartz, they could really use a coach that would emphasize disciplined play across the board.

For what it’s worth, Chris Burke of SI.com, who was at the game, mentioned that Penn State HC Bill O’Brien’s name was mentioned a lot at Ford Field.
