Michael Bennett Watching Situation Involving Seahawks & Kam Chancellor “Very Closely”

Rand Getlin of NFL Media mentions that Seahawks DE Michael Bennett and his representatives are expected to monitor the situation involving S Kam Chancellor and his holdout “very closely” in the coming weeks.

While this probably isn’t all that surprising to hear that one player plans to watch and see what the team elects to do with a teammate looking for a raise, it’s clear that the Seahawks could be in a tough situation when it comes to convincing Chancellor to show up without a new deal.

Seattle has already been forced to part ways with one veteran in DT Tony McDaniel after they locked up QB Russell Wilson and MLB Bobby Wagner to record setting deals. There’s also the issue of setting a precedent for future negotiations, as players would almost certainly use this against them if the decide to redo Chancellor’s deal after just two years.

Chancellor has already begun the process of sitting out of training camp in the hope of securing a new contract.

Chancellor, 27, still has another three years remaining on his five-year, $29.323 million contract that included $17 million guaranteed. He stands to make base salaries of $4.55 million (2015), $5.1 million (2016), and $6.8 million (2017).

In 2014, Chancellor appeared in 14 games and recorded 78 tackles, one interceptions, a forced fumble and six pass defenses for the Seahawks. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 20 safety out of 87 qualifying players.

Bennett, 29, signed four-year, $32 million contract that included $16 million guaranteed with the Seahawks in March of last year. He still has another three years remaining on the agreement to go along with base salaries of $6 million (2015), $4 million (2016), and $6 million (2017).

In 2014, Bennett appeared in all 16 games and recorded 39 tackles, seven sacks, and a forced fumble. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 2 defensive end in a 4-3 defense out of 59 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding Chancellor and Bennett as the news is available.
