Mike McCarthy Willing To Sit Out 2019 Season For Right Head-Coaching Job

Citing several sources close to Mike McCarthy, Jason La Canfora reports that the former Packers head coach will be “judicious and careful” when it comes to deciding where and when to coach again.

La Canfora says that while McCarthy is “very open” to the possibility of coaching in 2019, it is far from a guarantee.

McCarthy will reportedly spend this month assessing the landscape and spending time with his family. According to La Canfora, McCarthy’s representatives have already been fielding inquiries from interested teams.

Interestingly enough, La Canfora says that numerous sources close to McCarthy and Browns GM John Dorsey that they view this pairing as “far less than a slam dunk or sure thing” despite their prior experience working together.

La Canfora’s sources believe it’s “more likely” McCarthy does not end up with the Browns and the Panthers and Ravens’ jobs would have more appeal to him if they’re available.

Beyond that, La Canfora is not discounting the possibility of McCarthy sitting out a year if he doesn’t feel the right connection with a franchise and its ownership.

“Mike is not going to take a job just to take a job,” one of his close friends tells La Canfora.

According to La Canfora, sources close to McCarthy believe his ultimate dream job would be to reunite with his close friend John Schneider in Seattle if Pete Carroll were to retire.

McCarthy, 55, began his NFL coaching career with the Chiefs back in 1993 as an offensive quality control coordinator. He bounced around with the Packers, Saints and 49ers before the Packers hired him as their head coach in 2006.

The Packers made the decision to move on from McCarthy following their disappointing loss to the Cardinals.

During his 13-year tenure in Green Bay, McCarthy has led the Packers to a record of 125-77-2 (61.8 percent), which includes nine playoff appearances and a Super Bowl title in 2010.

We’ll have more regarding McCarthy as the news is available.
